Summer is upon us and with it comes a lot of unpredictable weather. Monitoring the rain, wind and possible storms is a daily task and something I take on so that my clients don’t have to stress over any decision-making.
Even with all of the modern technology and knowledge meteorologists have, it is the weather, so sometimes it’s still wrong. Sometimes there will be a random shower that isn’t even on the radar. Other times, it will call for heavy rain without a cloud in the sky. And don’t even get me started on how it changes from one minute to the next…leading to an unforgettable family photoshoot in the rain!
So what do we do on days the weather doesn’t look great? It starts with a conversation with the client. We’ll determine how late we can realistically call the session for them. My hair and makeup team does require me to notify them one hour prior to their start time, so there are times we will literally wait to call it at 3pm in the afternoon. However, I have some clients that need to know much earlier because they are leaving work, etc and in which case, we decide earlier based on the radar for rain and wind.
That said, it can change in an instant and often with very little warning. If you live in Tampa, you know this so I’ve found most of my clients just embrace it, we laugh and have a good time. If it means you get wet, you get wet. The chances of us being able to make something of it is greater than you think!
The Griffin family can attest to this. There was not a cloud in the sky and not a single ounce of rain on the radar. But right in the middle of their session in the field, a random Florida shower rolled in for literally five minutes. Instead of calling it off or getting disappointed, this family made the sweetest memories.
Unless it’s unsafe, a constant torrential downpour or I am unable to protect my gear, we typically go for it, especially if you’ve got the kids loaded and Mom has had her hair and makeup done.
Years from now you’ll look back on the photoshoot we did in the rain and laugh. You won’t remember the inconvenience or the fact that you got wet. You’ll remember how your kids lit up and thought it was the best day ever. You’ll remember giving your daughter a piggyback ride and giving the best family hugs. And most importantly, you’ll remember the smiles and the memories you’ve created with your family. IF you choose to embrace it.
