One of the questions I get asked most often is if I allow dogs in the studio, particularly for newborn sessions. Yes, yes, YES! I know how special fur babies are to families because we feel the same way about our dog, Ruger. He’s in a lot of our big family milestone sessions, and I wouldn’t have it any other way for your family.
That said, I do ask that you consider if it’s right for your dog. Every dog has a different temperament and will handle being in the studio differently than others. Also, take into account how they are adjusting to their new baby brother or sister and if it’s safe. Aside from that, here are a few additional tips and requests if you plan to have your dog join you for your session.
If you plan to have your dog participate in your newborn or milestone session in the studio, please let me know ahead of time. This just helps me know what to expect and prepare for the flow of your session. I like to know their name, if there are any commands they respond best to, and any other do’s and don’t’s when it comes to your dog.
In addition to their favorite treats, I ask that you also have a plan for when your dog is done with photos. You can have someone come take your dog home or sit with them in the studio. The most important thing is just making sure they aren’t running around loose.
Depending on how well trained your dog is, they may or may not look at me. Much like babies, we just go with it and if possible, let me take the lead in getting their attention. Keep in mind, sometimes we have to work a little extra magic to get them involved. Be patient, trust me to do what I do, and know that the end result will be beautiful! You can watch this video to see some of that magic in action and Lincoln’s newborn session below!
I am so glad that we photographed this Mom and Dad’s golden hour maternity session when we did! Little Lincoln kept trying to make her appearance and ultimately arrived six weeks early. After spending some time in the NICU, it was time for her newborn session in the studio.
Lincoln is the sweetest little girl and slept for most of her newborn session. Meanwhile, her built-in best friend and protector, Charlee, kept a close eye on her and loved being part of their family portraits. I cannot wait to watch Lincoln grow over the next year.
Spoiler alert, I just photographed her six-month milestone session and she just keeps getting sweeter. Be sure to follow along and watch for it on the blog soon!
If having your dog be part of your upcoming family session is something you’ve been considering, let me know. I’d love to chat through it with you and see if it’s a good option for your family. At the end of the day, your pet is part of your family and I know just how special it is to have those memories documents with them.
