Studio Features: 7 Light and Airy Photography Studios

A couple weeks ago I shared my biggest tips for opening up a photography studio. Today, we’re going to be featuring 7 light and airy photography studios for motherhood and newborn photographers across the country and Canada. Some have been in business for a few years and some over a decade. There’s a mix of in-home studios and commercial studios and styles, but the one thing they all have in common is a desire to serve their clients well from start to finish.

I also know that there are many of you out there dreaming of and taking steps to opening your own studio space. It’s our hope that these spaces will inspire you and encourage you to keep working towards your goal!

Karen – Reflections Photo

Location: Niagara, Ontario

Years in business: 17 | Years in studio: Moved to this home and turned the format sitting room into a studio in 2019!

Studio must-haves:

  1. Plants. I bring the outdoors in because green is my favorite, but also because it makes my client’s images indoor and outdoor images look cohesive when doing story walls.
  2. Empty room = blank canvas. I ask my clients to leave their stuff in the hall so I can photograph in any direction. Kids are unpredictable and this helps me capture their personalities.
  3. Simplicity. I have very few props or headbands. I prefer to keep it simple and let the subject shine through.

Rachael Little Photography

Location: Woodstock, Ontario

Years in business: 9 | Years in studio: In 2016 we purchased a home with a large walkout basement with this home studio project in mind. For the first few years I used the space with studio lights. Then, in October of 2021 we renovated the space to install two large patio doors that serve as my main light source for all sessions. I love that it’s west-facing, so I get some beautiful shadows and patterns on the walls late in the day.

Studio must-haves:

  1. My low and modern Soderham Sofa from Ikea. It has clean lines and suits my modern brand but it’s low height is perfect for little ones, too.
  2. I have a very minimalist aesthetic so I don’t keep too many things in the camera room. Because my office & samples are separate I have a completely photographable space, which means we capture lots of candid moments during a session.
  3. I have lots of wooden toys and books for older children during newborn sessions to keep them happy and capture some sweet candid moments, too.

It’s been so much fun getting to know each of these photographers a little more through some of their responses. To see what their studio must-haves are and how they use each of their studios has been inspiring for me to see. Be sure to connect with these motherhood and newborn photographers and follow along in The Coaching Collective as we wrap up this month talking about all things studio.
