How To Keep Consistency For A Client’s Growing Family

As a Newborn and Family photographer, I get to see multiple different kinds of family units. From one child to 5 children I’ve photographed them all. What that means as a full-service photographer like myself, is that all my images need to have consistency.

The two little muffins above are actually different babies! The Lankes brothers both had their Newborn, 6-month, and eventually one-year sessions with me in the studio. I made sure to keep consistent with my posing of the brothers as their mom wanted similar images of them framed side by side.

My tips and tricks for achieving a successful gallery are:

  1.  I use a digital gallery software to store all of my client’s images.
  2.  I consult my clients. It’s always important to have them be a part of the process, especially when knowing what photos they want to replicate specifically.
  3.  I try to have a portable device nearby to look through the digital gallery during the session. It takes a lot of the pressure off to be able to just take a quick peek at my iPad to look back at the older brother’s session as I’m posing the younger one.

An important pose to recreate is the family one. Now, some photographers might think that when dealing with siblings they should be in every family photo but I don’t agree. I think every child in all of their sessions should have their singular photo with their parents – their special moment. Siblings are a constant lesson in sharing but it’s okay to be selfish sometimes! Because….

You can always add the sibling in the next shot!

I can’t tell you how much I love to watch a family grow a little bit more each time they enter my studio. It is such an honor to match the posing of each sibling and see how much each child looks alike!

I am greatly looking forward to this family’s next one-year session and maybe the next newborn? 😉
