What to Wear for Your Photo Session | Dad Edition

When we think about what to wear for photo sessions, Dad is usually the last outfit we put together. Am I right?! Usually, the focus is on finding beautiful dresses for Mom and sweet little outfits for the little ones. Let’s be honest, those things are more fun to shop for! But, we can’t forget Dad!

Though my Client Wardrobe does include options for Dad, some Dads are a little more set in their ways and like to wear their own clothing. If it keeps them happy, then they have my support! In those cases, I like to send some options on what would photograph well to help narrow down the options.

What to Wear for Photo Sessions | 3 Things I Look for to Keep Dad Happy

Generally, we keep it fairly simple and neutral for Dad. It’s hot here in Tampa though, so comfort and style are key! With that in mind, here are my 3 must-haves in the very best outfit options for Dad:

  1. Breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics: Performance, tech, or linen fabrics are perfect.
  2. Well-fitted clothes: Try to avoid baggy clothing and find options that fit well while still being easy to move around in comfortability.
  3. Wrinkle-free: Less work on your part!

Tops

I have a variety of sizes and neutral colors (white, grey, soft blue) in oxfords and henleys in the client wardrobe. Both are easy to iron, look good from the start to end of your session. Paired with khaki or grey colored pants, these style and color shirts will go with just about anything Mom chooses from the client wardrobe and can be dressed up or down.

Pants

For pants, I do have Dads purchase their own or wear some they may already have. Over the years, I have found certain styles, brands and colors to not only photograph best but be most comfortable for Dad. The last thing you want is for him to be stuck in some tight pants that are too hot or too tight to be able to play with his kids.

Traveler Pant from Banana Republic – This pant is a little more expensive but very well made and will last you for years. The best way to describe the Traveler Pant is it looks and feels like a pair of jeans but comes in a khaki, light grey and also some other soft colors depending on the season. I’ve personally bought my husband a really light, soft pink and soft green that I love (and so does he!). It also has some stretch so you can move, chase the kids and are super comfortable. Oh, and they also don’t wrinkle which is great for busy families and your photographer!

J Crew Tech Pants – These are more of a performance fabric, really lightweight, and won’t show sweat or wrinkle. They come in a lot of colors and are perfect for sessions when the humidity is at an all-time high.

Goodfellow Lightweight Jean Target – I actually discovered this pair while I was out shopping. I saw a gentleman wearing them and I knew they were the perfect pair of more casual pants for photoshoots. They look like linen but are actually a lightweight jean material. My husband wore the khaki version in a recent photoshoot and loved them. They photographed well, are breathable in hot weather and most importantly, he said they were comfortable!

Options I recommend avoiding: shorts and denim jeans. Jeans tend to be dark in comparison to what the rest of the family is wearing and will stick out. Not to mention, they tend to be more stiff and make for sitting down or playing with your children not as comfortable.

Shoes

Depending on the type of session and location, you may or may not need shoes. I like to have clients go barefoot in the studio, as well as in beach sessions. If your session is at the park or field, I recommend close-toed shoes.

My goal as your family photographer is to make sure everyone is comfortable, including Dad! You really can’t go wrong with any of these three pants and styling suggestions. There’s something for everyone, whether you prefer to be more casual or dress up a bit more.

If you’re trying to help Dad decide what to wear for your photo session I hope this was a helpful resource! All links to items are included under each graphic.
